Let me start by saying I am not coordinated at all! I cannot dance. I’m pretty sure if I do dance, I look like an awkward giraffe throwing my arms is all directions. Bad description, I know, but I’m that bad. I have two left feet and no rhythm. But yesterday I danced! I danced like no one was looking (and I really hope that’s the case.)
I did the potty dance!
It was a celebratory instinct. My two and half year old came to me and said “Mommy, tee tee potty by myself!” Sure enough, I followed my naked jay bird to the bathroom. The toilet seat was up, his Lightning McQueen potty seat was in place and he had done it! All by himself!
So I did THE dance.
You know, the one where you run around the house clapping and awkwardly shaking your behind while chanting “You did it, you did it! You tee tee’d in the potty!”
Yeah, that was me. My son smiled the biggest grin, clapped and yelled “YAY!” We both looked silly and my six month old daughter looked at us with her wobbly head in confusion, but we didn’t care because my son had made a victory. A small victory but a victory nonetheless.
The idea of potty training my son has been a mountain I haven’t been prepared to climb all the way yet. In the past year we have tried multiple times with little success.
We’ve tried, treats, sticker charts, stuffed animals wearing underwear and using the potty in hopes that my son will want to use it too. We’ve tried the “three day training program” but quit after a day or two. I’ve made the exhausting run back and forth to the toilet with a wet naked bottom dangling in my out stretched arms too many times to count.
When my daughter came along, I decided to give training a break all together due to extreme exhaustion that comes along with adding a new member to the family.
But while I was grocery shopping Monday I found the neatest thing at Wal-Mart… PLASTIC PANTS! They look like large underwear but they are plastic, waterproof material like what you would use to cover your crib mattress but in the shape of underwear! Your child wears his/her big kid undies and puts the plastic pants over them. They even have cute little designs on them! I mean these things are genius!

So we gave them a try yesterday. He stayed dry all morning! This was a big win in our house!
I know we have a ways to go but I am just excited about our small progress and thought I’d share these nifty plastic pants with you!
If you have any potty training tips please post them here for me and all the other moms doing the potty dance these days!
